Services That Sell Rank, and Why to Avoid Them

An industry sells rank improvement and reviews. What is actually sold, what enforcement looks like, and why it destroys measurement.

Search for help improving marketplace rank and a market appears offering it directly. Understanding what is being sold is worth a few minutes before anyone considers buying.

What is offered

Launch services promising a rank position within days.

Review generation, through incentivised purchase schemes.

Rebate schemes where buyers are reimbursed outside the marketplace.

Traffic and click services aimed at search position.

Keyword ranking guarantees.

"Verified purchase" review packages.

What is actually being sold

Purchased units. Someone buys the product, frequently reimbursed, to create sales that move rank.

The rank is real in the sense that sales occurred. The demand is not.

Reviews from those purchases, which carry the verified-purchase marker and are therefore weighted more heavily by the marketplace.

Nothing durable. Rank decays exactly as it does for genuine sales. The position lasts as long as the spending does.

The marketplace position

All of it violates the terms of every major marketplace. Incentivised reviews, rebate schemes and manipulated rankings are explicitly prohibited.

Enforcement exists and has improved. Marketplaces reconcile orders against refunds, detect coordinated purchasing patterns, and analyse reviewer networks. They have far more data than any outside observer.

Consequences range from review removal and listing suppression to account suspension. For a business whose revenue runs through that account, suspension is existential.

Enforcement is frequently delayed, which is why the practice appears to work. Detection lagging the activity by months is not detection failing.

The regulatory position

Beyond marketplace terms, several jurisdictions have moved against incentivised and fake reviews under consumer protection law.

Enforcement actions against sellers and against review brokers have occurred in multiple markets, with financial penalties.

Disclosure requirements apply to incentivised endorsements in several regimes.

This has moved from a terms-of-service question to a regulatory one in the last several years, and the direction is one-way.

The analytical argument, which is the one that persuades people

Set aside the terms and the law. Rank manipulation destroys your own ability to measure anything.

Your baseline is manufactured, so every subsequent test compares against a fiction.

You cannot tell what organic demand is, because you have never observed it.

Every campaign measurement is invalid, because the underlying level was purchased.

Your conversion calibration is wrong, because the purchased units did not behave like real ones.

The reviews describe an experience that did not happen, so they cannot inform product decisions.

A seller who buys rank has bought the number and lost the instrument. The number was only ever useful as a measurement.

What produces durable position instead

Sales at a price people will pay, which is the only input to sales rank.

Conversion improvement — listing quality, images, price, delivery — which improves search position and does not decay.

Genuine reviews, solicited within the marketplace's permitted mechanisms.

Advertising during launch, which buys the loop legitimately, measured honestly.

External traffic, which produces sales the marketplace's competitors do not have access to.

None of it is fast, which is the entire appeal of the alternative.

If a competitor is doing it

Exclude them from your basket and note why.

Do not match the number. You would be benchmarking against purchased volume.

Expect it to end. Manipulated position is not durable and enforcement arrives.

Do not build a strategy on their apparent success, which is the practical harm manipulation does to honest competitors: it distorts everyone else's read of the market.

What legitimate launch support looks like

There is a real market for launch help that does not involve manipulation, and distinguishing it is straightforward.

Advertising management, with the spend visible and the results attributed by the platform.

Listing optimisation — copy, images, attributes, keywords — measured by conversion rate.

Pricing and promotion strategy using the marketplace's own mechanics.

External traffic — email, content, partnerships, press — producing real customers.

Review solicitation within the marketplace's permitted programmes, which exist and are legitimate.

The distinguishing question: does the service produce sales from people who want the product, or sales arranged to move a number?

A provider who cannot answer that plainly, or whose guarantees are stated in rank positions rather than in traffic or conversion, is selling the second thing regardless of how it is described.
